Opening the Door to Security Problems and Solutions by Taylor Jensen
This summer, malicious doorbell-ringing cost my friends hours of sleep, frustration, and fear. They reported the incidents, but the frequency wasn't consistent enough to let the sheriff apprehend anyone. After repeated attempts to determine who was ringing their doorbell to waken and worry them (sometimes twice a night), my friends finally turned to a wireless security camera for resolution.
The friends who were victimized are strong willed--but retired and no longer in their prime. At the onset of the harassment, they would boldly open the door and storm into the darkness to investigate. They progressed to patrolling their property while armed, thinking that thieves were casing their home!
In the morning, they sometimes found the narrow tracks of a golf cart on the lawn and broken bedding plants. They devised a trap, parking their cars facing outwards in the driveway and waiting in the dark, fully-clothed with their keys in hand.
When the doorbell rang, they raced to their cars, turning in opposite directions from the driveway to speed to the intersection where their residential circle met the highway.
That worked--they exposed three strapping neighborhood teenagers in their headlights and read them the riot act. No admissions were made and no proof existed. The teenagers were smart enough to stop for a while and then resume the doorbell prank.
Determined, my friends invested in surveillance cameras for the front and side doors. The video cameras had night vision to record in the dark, electric eyes to trigger the recording, and a hard drive to record whatever was digitally captured.
Ultimately, the largest of the three pranksters (almost 6 feet tall and of high school age) was photographed in the act of ringing the doorbell. The retirees considered contacting the teenager's parents--those "responsible" adults who allowed their underage children to prowl in the neighborhood at all hours.
Wisely, they opted for the sheriff's office, instead, and let them do their job armed with the digital proof.
This story has a happy ending--but what if my friends had opened the door to real intruders? What if my friends had used their firearms on those kids or those strapping teenagers had used violence against THEM when they met in a standoff on the darkened highway?
Whatever your age or physical condition, there are better options than storming outside in the middle of the night to see what's up! Home security systems and devices are designed to keep you safe. Save yourself a lot of frustration and possible danger by investing in the appropriate system and letting it do its job.
